A Note from Father Manny...
The readings this weekend, remind us not to focus so much on earthly things up to the extent of ignoring the heavenly ones.
“Vanity of vanities! All things are vanity! What profit comes to man from all the toil and anxiety of heart with which he has labored under the sun?” (Ecc. 1:2, 2:21-23)
God created us, the world with all the material things we need to live. All of them are good. However, the Bible tell us that we don’t have the absolute ownership of these blessings, but only to be responsible stewards.
Earthly things can never satisfy the human heart, as St. Augustine testified: “My heart is restless, until it finally rests in you Lord!”.
The parable is not about need but about greed. It is not the possessions that are sinful but our possessiveness. Life is a great gift to be grateful, not a possession to cling to. St. Paul in the second reading says: “Let your thoughts be on the heavenly things and not of the earth.”
However, on the other hand, St. Paul in his First letter to Timothy, (1 Tim. 6:10), says: “For the Love of Money is the root of all evil”, which means money or wealth themselves are good and what makes it sinful is the excessive attachment for it.
Let me end up with Mahatma Gandhi’s words: “Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs but not every man’s greed.”
Yours in the Ministry,
